A New Toothpaste Ingredient Could Help to Harden Your Teeth

added on: May 12, 2016

Blue toothbrush with blue toothpaste.Have you heard of BioMInF? Not many people have, but it is something you could be learning about more in the future. That’s because this is a new toothpaste ingredient that could completely revolutionize the way we care for our teeth.

BioMInF was developed by researchers at Queen Mary University of London, and it was created to act as a technology for repairing teeth. It works by putting lost minerals back into the enamel of the teeth, preventing decay and treating sensitivity – all while you sleep! This happens by slowly releasing calcium, fluoride ions, and phosphate over a period of 8-12 hours to form a fluorapatite mineral that will protect, strengthen, and rebuild tooth structures. This slow release is beneficial in preventing future decay.

When considering how prevalent and widespread the tooth decay problem is in the world, it is easy to see why this development is so important. Tooth decay is the most common disease in the world, and most adults will experience it along with sensitivity at some point in their lives. Dental decay is also highly common with children – 60-90% of kids are affected, and decay is also the greatest reason that kids are admitted into the hospital.

It is expected that BioMInF will be added to some toothpaste varieties and may be available in high-end retail stores by the end of 2016, and a fluoride-free option is also being developed. It is thought that this breakthrough innovation could play a major role in reducing tooth decay and tooth sensitivity problems. Not only could it be used at home, but it might also be incorporated into professionally-applied products, including dental polishing pastes, re-mineralizing filling materials, and varnishes.
